Banco de Portugal points to a shortfall of around 300,000 homes
The governor considers the current pace of construction insufficient and calls for greater public and private investment.
The governor of Banco de Portugal estimates that the country is short of around 300,000 homes and considers it urgent to increase its response capacity.
The current pace of construction is insufficient to address Portugal’s housing shortage, according to the governor of Banco de Portugal. He estimates that the shortfall stands at around 300,000 homes.
The scale of this estimate places construction capacity at the centre of the response to the housing crisis. In the governor’s view, investment will need to increase in order to expand the supply of housing.
This response should draw on both public and private resources. The position therefore identifies a need to accelerate construction and involve both sectors in reducing the estimated shortfall.
